Welcome to Health Plan of San Joaquin/Mountain Valley Health Plan (“Health Plan”)’s Prenatal Program, Me + My Baby! If this is your first or last pregnancy, we want to help you get what you are looking for yourself, your body, and your baby.

This journey will have its ups and downs and Health Plan is here to help with:

Pregnancy & Substance Use

You might find yourself using something that can harm you. Now that your pregnant your baby is exposed to those same substances. If you are wanting to learn more about what help is on hand expand each topic.

Marijuana

If I am pregnant, can I use cannabis to help with nausea?
Answer: 
No. Using cannabis during pregnancy can impact the growth and progress of your baby’s brain. The baby might be more likely to be born with a lower birth weight.

Is it safe to use cannabis when nursing?
Answer: It’s unclear from the research. What we do know is the chemicals found in marijuana in any form can be passed from the mother to the baby through breast milk.

There is a lot to learn about using cannabis during pregnancy and its safety. Make sure to talk to your doctor so both of you can figure out what works best for everyone.

Tobacco use can impact your chances to have a healthy pregnancy. If you are using tobacco during your pregnancy maybe you’ve decided this is the time to quit. You can get help with quitting aids; your choices can involve:

  • NicoDerm CQ patches
  • Nicorette gum
  • Nicorette lozenges
  • Zyban
  • Chantix

Opioids

There is help for you if you find yourself using painkillers or other opioids more than you’d like. No matter your situation your doctor, health plan, and other staff are ready to help you. Quitting on your own is not best, but there is proven treatment for people who use opioids. It’s called Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and it involves a set of:

  • Medication use
  • Counseling
  • Behavioral therapy

Some myths about MAT for opioid use disorder involve:

  • Myth: MAT is only for the short term.
    • Fact: Research shows that patients on MAT for at least 1-2 years have the greatest rates of long-term success.
  • Myth: My condition is not bad enough to call for MAT.
    • Fact: MAT uses varied medications that are tailored to fit your unique situation.
  • Myth: Most health plans don’t cover MAT.
    • Fact: As an HPSJ member you are covered for this type of treatment.
