Chlamydia Screening (CHL)
Members assigned female at birth ages 16 – 24 years by the end of the calendar year who are identified as sexually active should have at least one screening for chlamydia every calendar year.
Sexual activity is identified through pharmacy data and claims data including but not limited to testing for pregnancy or diagnosis codes identifying sexual activity.
Recommended Best Practices:
- Make testing part of your offices annual visit routine – Include chlamydia testing as part of a routine clinical preventative care visits.
- Complete screening for chlamydia at the same time as in office pregnancy testing
- Educate patients on importance of annual testing – Clearly explain the significance of chlamydia testing in preventing and managing health issues. Provide information on the asymptomatic nature of chlamydia and the importance of early detection.
- Emphasize Confidentiality – Reassure patients that all testing and results are kept confidential.
- Normalize the conversation – Use non‐stigmatized language to discuss sexual health. Normalize the conversation around STD testing, emphasizing that it is a routine part of comprehensive healthcare.
- Address Common Concerns – Anticipate and address potential concerns or misconceptions patients may have about chlamydia testing.
