Literacy Health for Our Healthy Community
Rotary Read-In 2019
HPSJ Chief Medical Officer Lakshmi Dhanvanthari, MD, joined with fellow HPSJ employees and community partners at Stockton's August Knodt Elementary and Great Valley Elementary for the annual HPSJ volunteering opportunity through Rotary Read-In. HPSJ readers spent time with the children, grades K-3rd, and shared something about themselves, answered questions from the children, and donated the book they read to the class - which in turn helps increase school libraries. This is one small - and delightful - way HPSJ continues to contribute to local literacy for health, while increasingly seeking more routes to meaningfully leverage our work with community partners.
HPSJ Health Library - New for March
Here's the latest from the HPSJ Health Library.

Thanks to Latino Times for carrying this important article in its March issue, helping to cover the start of Health Plan of San Joaquin's new Breast Health Initiative.
Here's to Health, Community, and Camaraderie

HPSJ donates $100 on behalf of any employee who completes at least 13 HPSJ Walks for Health events in a year.

Our HPSJ Walker employees then get to choose the walk/organization to receive the $100 donation. The tallies are now in for last year. Glenda Guzman (Provider Services Rep II) and Tanya Anderson (Accounting Clerk II) both earned this opportunity for the 2018 year!

Glenda Guzman: I decided last year to become actively engaged with my community AND improve my health. By participating in Walks for Health, I achieved both goals; it was a win-win. I get to support a truly inspiring organization - the Haven Women’s Center in Modesto. They help survivors of domestic violence, sexual abuse and human trafficking regardless of gender identity, immigration status or sexual orientation. These are unfortunate issues that affect our underserved community. They can use all the help they can get. Bonus: I get to spend time with my co-workers and we encourage each other to keep active because, ‘We got this!’ - shout out to the Provider Networks team!

Tanya Anderson: "I enjoy walking and I like the challenge of trying to beat my time from the previous HPSJ Walk. Also, the longer the walk, the better excuse I have to take an afternoon nap!

I was so happy that my suggestion to include the Easter Walk was approved as one of HPSJ’s 2018 events. I’m currently looking for a new HPSJ Walk for 2019! I chose the Lodi Salvation Army Hope Harbor Family Service Center as the recipient of my $100 donation. They offer a great service for our community by providing emergency lodging, hot meals, and clothing. Plus, this charity is involved with the Easter Walk that I suggested!"

Health Helpers Lean-in on Our Opioids Crisis

Health Plan of San Joaquin (HPSJ) collaborates with local organizations in the San Joaquin County Opioid Safety Coalition (SJCOSC) run by San Joaquin Public Health Services.

HPSJ is one of the partner agencies selected to serve on the accelerator team (a program of the California Opioid Safety Network) that helps guide the coalition. Other organizations represented include health care providers, community organizations, law enforcement, first responders, and educators.

The SJCOSC was initiated in March 2018. Its aim is to reduce deaths attributed to opioids. With partner enthusiasm and expertise, the coalition has been able to conduct training, community assessments, strategic planning, educational outreach, and group-based academic detailing. An early coalition effort focused on working to prevent overdose deaths by launching a naloxone distribution program. The goal was to distribute naloxone to the friends and family members of people at risk of overdose. To date, the coalition has given away over 900 naloxone kits received through a grant from the California Department of Public Health.

As each of the SJCOSC partners works with urgency and care to test and implement effective solutions, each also is committed to the guiding principle that any measurable, lasting solutions must be woven into an integrated menu of approaches.
