Health Plan of San Joaquin (HPSJ) promotes senior staffer to new position: Director of Pharmacy and Clinical Analytics

Johnathan Yeh (French Camp, CA) – Health Plan of San Joaquin (HPSJ) has announced that Johnathan Yeh, Pharm.D. has expanded responsibility in a newly established senior position within HPSJ. Yeh has been HPSJ’s director of clinical programs with oversight responsibility for the clinical analytics team. He has now transitioned to the new, combined role of director of pharmacy and clinical analytics, and will have responsibility for both teams.

HPSJ Chief Medical Officer Lakshmi Dhanvanthari, MD, said, “Johnathan joined HPSJ as a resident in HPSJ’s nationally-accredited Managed Care Pharmacy Residency Program, in 2007. He then served as a clinical pharmacist from 2008-2009, and since 2011 he has been our clinical programs director. Throughout his tenure at HPSJ, he has taken on progressively challenging roles and succeeded at each. He also has continued to be involved in the strategic direction of the HPSJ pharmacy programs.”

Health Plan of San Joaquin was established in 1995 by state statute and San Joaquin County ordinance as a community-based, not-for-profit health plan initiative. Now, in 2015, HPSJ is the leading Medi-Cal managed care provider for San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties. With over 320,000 members – more than a third of growth over the last almost two years since Affordable Care Act implementation – HPSJ is at the forefront of local health care access and delivery.

Yeh said, “As the opportunities for greater access to quality health care continue to flow from the Affordable Care Act, it is important to measure how we are doing and hold ourselves accountable. At the root of our success will be all the ways we partner with the HPSJ provider network, including all of our network pharmacies, to achieve our shared vision: To continuously improve the health of our community.”

He noted that the road ahead for HPSJ will lead to even more focus on the local community. “In the ever-evolving healthcare environment, HPSJ will continue to serve existing and new patient populations.”

Yeh is a Stockton, California native. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and he earned his pharmacy doctorate at the University of Southern California.

Yeh, who found that his fascination with data could be a powerful resource for HPSJ as it was experiencing waves of growth and then innovating to deliver the promise of healthcare reform and greatly expanded Medi-Cal, said, “The practice of modern health and medicine is now rooted in data. Sometimes we really need it to double-check that instinct or balance the hunch. That way we can be more confident in our instincts going forward.”

Yeh was an important part of the team that this year secured for HPSJ its first NCQA accreditation (see below for more about NCQA and Health Plan of San Joaquin). “HPSJ’s programs are data driven and we are moving towards providing timely, actionable information to our providers to improve the quality of care provided to our members,” said Yeh.
